Frequently Asked Questions
How did the idea of the trip originate?
Steve Fossett made a successful trip around the world in a balloon and I was telling friends that there needed to be humanitarian parts to the trip. I was asked what I would do. I jokingly said I would probably fish all 50 states in 50 days and make an awareness for cancer. I am a pilot myself and realize the complexities of his projects and really admire him. I wish I had his abilities.
How will everyone know you fished all 50 states?
At each location I will have two witnesses sign a form that will be submitted to Guinness World Records. These witnesses will verify that I fished the proper waters and how long it took to catch a fish. If I fail to catch a fish in any state, then I will return to that state after the trip to fish until I catch a fish. There will be enough media. both print and electronic to verify where and when I fish.
How were the two University Research Hospitals selected?
I made a list of respected hospitals, then started contacting them. There were some very fine facilities that were not structured to work in our type of fundraising. I selected the two finalist because of the respect they have in the industry and the respect they have from their patients. Our headquarters is in Missouri, and many of my friends went to Texas for treatment. I selected only two because of diluting funds and decided to keep it to two so we could have more of an impact on particular forms of cancer.
How were the locations, host and times to fish selected?
Some of the host were selected because they are at the location selected. Some were recommended and others I really like them as individuals and asked them to be host. These positions are not for bid.
Do you ever change host and why do you change?
In the July of 2002 when I started this, I have had to look for very few new host. The ones that have been changed have asked to be relieved because of family or personal matters. One asked out because of business problems. I have asked no one and will not ask anyone to step down.
How is your trip financed?
By advertising and sponsorship of companies and individuals. Our server records show that our advertisers receive as much coverage as any advertising medium in America today.
How much of your charity fund raising actually gets to the charity?
Our national charities receive 100% of the money raised because we are not "middlemen". The donor makes out their check to the charity directly, in this case a cancer research facility.
Our local charities get the net proceeds of the project. Our concerts for example, the charity receives the income at the time and at the venue of the concert. If it is a sponsored concert, (a corporation paying for the entertainers) there is more to the charity.
What is the legal status of 50 STATES FISHING IN 50 DAYS?
This is outlined and constantly updated as changes occur at www.50-50fishing.com/legal.htm
Do you have need for volunteers?
Yes. We need volunteers at each location in the country, contact gbayless@50-50fishing.com Parrot Heads who want to help with local activities contact Kathy Mullen kemullen@mchsi.com
How are you traveling from location to location?
We will be flying. Many people have asked us if it would be cheaper to drive. There places on the east coast where it maybe more convenient because of distance. We will have to look at those locations.
